The real problems are not the specific causes of the crises of 2008 (banks) or 2001 (dotcom) or 1998 (Long-Term Capital Management) or 1989 (US Savings and Loans), but the enduring power of finance to be socially and economically disruptive.

Me:  Although dismissed as a non-financial reporter, Matt Taibi did make the valid point that financial crises are built into our present system, and that people profit when they happen.  Of course, normal people bear the brunt of these crises, but folks in the financial system do benefit when these  things happen.
